#UnderTheSpotlight: Tory Lanez

It’s been 2 weeks since the Canadian Rapper/Singer/Producer (that is not Drake), Tory Lanez dropped his Lost Cause Album (free of charge) and i’m more than confident when I say this is someone who’s about to be somebody in the music industry.

Meet Tory Lanez

With a total of 8 projects to his name since 2010, Tory Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson) is a 22 year old superstar in the making. You may have already heard him thanks to his minor hit last year: ‘Know What’s up feat. Kirko Bangz’ (Video of which can be seen below). He also featured on Meek Mill’s F**king With Me track off of DreamChasers 3, and this year lent his vocal’s for YG’s Me & My Bitch single (My Krazy Life LP)

Although Tory Lanez may be often heard singing, he was and still is a rapper first. A rapper with great story telling ability and a creative musical mind, who can do just about anything and everything in the booth.

Lanez explains it best himself in an interview with Lucas. G for DJbooth.net (Full interview can be read HERE)

“People think I’m this confused artist who cant pick a lane and sounds like everybody. They tell me I sound like this guy or that guy. I feel like people need to understand that when I make music, I make it to make art. Some people don’t understand how talented I am and how far I am willing to go for my art.  Sometimes it makes people skeptical and makes them scared. People don’t understand why I’m so everywhere with the music.”

Evidently Lanez is passionate about what he does and wishes to be uniquely identified as an artist in his own lane (no pun intended.) He may not take too well to the Drake comparisons but at Spotlight we appreciate his creative blend of rap and R&B, and look forward to hearing him grow as an artist.

Don’t just listen to us. Check him out for yourself.  Stream and Download  ‘Lost Cause’ and ‘Chixtape 2′ below.

On Lost Cause we get some boastful raps, story telling raps and a bit of falsettos just to make it truly a Tory Lanez project.

On Chixtape 2, we get the full R&B Tory Lanez getting his Jerimih/The Dream vocals on. His involvement in the production side  also sees him uniquely flip some classic R&B bangers such as “Pony,” “The Boy Is Mine,” and “No Scrubs”.
