Stefflon Don enlists Nigerian household names Rema and Tiwa Savage on her Yoruba-infused single ‘Can’t Let You Go’.
Stefflon Don surprised fans with her release in the final quarter of 2020, as she tapped into her natural singing voice – something that is not often heard from the dancehall artist. This was well received, as the single has a nice soft melody which suits both a party, and a wind-down evening vibe.
It seems Stefflon Don is reaching new heights this year, and why not tap further into the West-African audience with a song that’s due to get great reception, no doubt!
Rema comes in with a play-on the infamous Saweetie & Quavo love-story quote: “You so icy girl, I’m a glacier boy” further setting the tone that romance is the theme of the single. What better time than a couple of days before Valentine’s day to help get me in the mood!
Tiwa jumps on her verse echoing the Yoruba in the chorus, and the distinctiveness of her voice shines through instantly. She follows on with harmonies, putting a Tiwa-touch on the track and maintaining the light-hearted afro-vibe of the song.
Rema delivers in true Rema style; giving us a concise verse that leaves us wanting more – and he finishes off the track with accompanying ad-libs to Stefflon’s singing.
As Stefflon Don’s first single of the year, it is clear she aims to continue honing in on her African audience, and create a fanbase that stems wider than just the UK. Some would say she’s taking a leaf out of Burna’s book. (But you didn’t hear that from me!)
