It’s been a while since we hit the Overlooked Series. Last feature we looked at Good Music’s Cy Hi The Prince. This time around it’s Emilio Rojas. A very much underrated rapper who has been doing his thing for a while now.
Four or five years ago Emilio was on tracks with the likes Big K.R.I.T, Yelawolf and B.O.B, destroying verses and features. Often outshining his peers on the come up it would seem that Emilio would be destined for mainstream success sooner or later.
The once ‘freshman’, Yelawolf is signed to Eminem, one of the most successful rappers ever, and released his debut solo album ‘Radioactive’ under Shady records. As well as contributing to the upcoming Shady XV compilation album he is also killing cyphers and readying for his second album ‘Love Story’. Big Krit, also an ‘ex-freshman’ just released his second album ‘Cadillactica’ on DefJam this year and is always mentioned in blogs as one of todays new generation greats. With no introduction really needed, B.O.B, is a Hip Hop Grammy nominated super star with a number of hit singles and albums under his belt.
Then we have Emilio, who has been releasing music of the highest quality since 2010’s Life Without Shame mixtape/album. With a tick next to lyrics, content, flows, talented producers on board, big name features and backing from the likes of DJ Green Lantern and Justice League, Emilio is still unsigned. Not that being signed has anything to do with being successful (See: Chance The Rapper) but Emilio Rojas’ name or music just isn’t being heard as much as it deserves to be.
Each year he has quietly dropped gems for his core fans base, and continued his onslaught on features and freestyles. In his more recent freestyles Emilio showcases his versatility, as he comfortably rides every beat thrown his way.
Try Me (Dej Loaf) Freestyle
Stay With Me (Sam Smith) Freestyle
Following our last article on story telling rappers, Emilio also has that going for him. This is evident throughout his catalogue of work whether he’s talking about Crazy B*tches, Ex drama or growing up in poverty.
Other Emilio projects include Breaking Point (2012), No Shame, No Regrets (2013) and #ZeroFucksGiven (2014) which we had already mentioned earlier this year in our article on the best releases of the first half of 2014. Each project all worth checking out and includes features from Joe Budden, Styles P, Troy Ave and more.
