Crayon ‘TWELVE A.M’ EP Review

Don Jazzy’s latest recruit to the prestigious Nigerian label MAVIN, unveils a 4-track EP; each song with a slightly different genre-feel, to give us a great idea of who Crayon is as an artist.

We are introduced to Crayon with track one, titled Sync. The production is typical of London’s style, who has produced for the likes of Tiwa Savage and Wizkid. This song has a smooth beat to it, nothing too over the top and delivers exactly as it should. Focusing on his vocals and harmonies, Crayon gives us a mellow-fro song, perfect for a wind-down, and also shows vulnerability through his lyrics.

Followed by Too Correct, featuring label-mate and household name Rema, we have an amapiano inspired track, giving summertime vibes and has actually left me wanting more. The chorus is so catchy, and I can definitely see myself doing the maddest footwork to this at a day party with my friends, when Boris frees us! Producer Vibez has done exactly that – created a beat suitable for a summer release.

Vibez comes through again for Crayon on the third track, my personal favourite, Mandem. This speaks to my Nigerian-British heart and features the popular Nigerian-Brit producer-artist One Acen. Crayon flexes his rap-singing style with an equally captivating chorus and lyrics, and One Acen comes in interpolating the chorus, bouncing off Crayon’s style and lyrics effortlessly. One Acen also gives us a reminder of Wizkid’s Don’t Dull, with the Yoruba infusion in his lyrics, staying true to his roots and reminding us of the legends that came before him.

Crayon closes his EP with Jackpot, featuring Bella Shmurda – most famously known for the amazing vibes and enjoyment created by his track Cash App. Jackpot also creates that “jaiye” atmosphere, rounding off the EP perfectly.

Crayon is definitely an artist to keep an eye on, as he shows versatility and genre-bending in this EP. I’m also given the impression that he doesn’t take life too seriously, as 3 out of the 4 tracks are purely good-feel songs. The anticipation for a good summer is increasing day by day as we wait for restrictions to be lifted and lockdown to be over. One thing I know for sure, is that the music lined up for the summer of 2021 is phenomenal, and I can’t wait to experience it all at its fullest!
