Our music scene has been on the rise for the past few years with UK Rap, Drill, Grime and now Afro Swing dominating radio stations and playlists across the country. Each year more doors are opened and more of our artists are celebrated in the mainstream media and beyond, 2018 being no different.
What is even more greater is how our favourite artists have now created brands that transcends just music.
Early this month rap duo Krept and Konan announced the opening date of their new Croydon restaurant “crepes and cones”. Stormzy also announced his line up for his annual “Merky Festival” which will be taking place in Ibiza this July. Prior to this, Steff London announced her collaboration with leading online clothing brand boohoo catering to women sizes 6-24 and Skepta is gearing up for the release of his second collaboration with Nike.
These are just a snippet of the extra curricular business activities that our rap and grime stars are involved in, however it’s a trend that I am happy and hope to see continue.
We need more black owned business in the UK and it’s great to have a few of them birthed from our music scene.
